Feb 1, 2023 · S90v has some huge changes in its chemical composition if we compare it with S30v. S90v has 2.3% Carbon which is approx 58% higher than the S30v which has only 1.45% of Carbon. Carbon makes steel hard and also enhances its ability to bear any wear/tear. 14% Chromium is ideal in both steel types.

That is how hard the steel is and can affect edge holding and wear resistance. M4 is somewhere in the Rc 63-65 range and is much harder than other steels. Stain resistance isn't that much higher than 1095 though.

I use regularly a Buck Woodsman and a Buck folder (285 i think) in 420hc. They are great but don't hold an edge like S30v or other "super" steels. 420hc is a great affordable steel but you need to touch them up often if you want a razor sharp blade. But mainly, because Rex 45 is tougher than S30V, it can maintain a more acute edge which translates into better edge retention. Rex45 is a better steel relative to S30V. With diamonds it sharpens as easily as S30V. I re-profiled Rex45 without much effort. And the same applies to S90V if you use CBN and diamonds.
